A friend sent this link to me about a 14 year study demonstrating a link to pancreatic cancer and soft drinks. While it would be easy for me to jump on the bandwagon as an ex-soft drink junkie (we are the worst), and it would be easy for me to say “I told you so!” I cannot in good conscious do that here.
D0 soft drinks cause pancreatic cancer?
While the data seems pretty convincing, the study also sites four other studies done previously that did not show a link. The percentages also seem oddly high to me, enough that it makes me question the data and its accuracy.
With that said, I could go on and on about soft drinks.
I could go on about how there is a very direct and clear parallel trend line between the introduction of high fructose corn syrup into soft drinks in the late 70’s and the increased rate of obesity that follows it, almost perfectly, from then until now.
I could go on about how most commercially grown corn used to make corn syrup is genetically modified to grow its own larvicide to prevent crop damage.
I could go on about how Monsanto is behind that little marvel of modern science.
I could also add that it is worthy of a major class action lawsuit that companies are allowed to put the label “All Natural” on products, like soda, that contain corn syrup. The process required to make it and the resulting toxins are anything but natural.
Did I mention that corn syrup has replaced sugar in most products because the government subsidizes it. They give the farmers who grow it money so that it is cheaper to sell than it costs to grow?
Lastly I could go on about how corn used for corn syrup has replaced most grazing pastures for cattle in the US which is why most beef must be raised in feed lots rather than in the great wide open with fresh air. (The soft drink industry is one of the biggest reasons for this.)
But I wont.
Yes I would love to run to all my soft drink addicted friends and show them this study just like an ex-smoker gets on their soapbox about the dangers of smoking, but I cant. Really, I would love to. I would really, really love to! This study just doesn’t present a strong case I am afraid.
Even if soda doesn’t cause cancer, would you still want to drink it if you knew what you know now? If you cant kick the soda, at least find an organic, healthier alternative for it rather than the ones found in most grocery stores. You are better than that and deserve better too.
